Conference on Emerging Priorities for Sustainable Partnerships

The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute is organizing a Conference titled “Emerging Priorities for Sustainable Partnerships” at the India International Centre, New Delhi on June 1, 2013, to present collaborative research that has been completed, or is currently being undertaken, by Indian and Canadian universities/research institutions in four focus areas:

1. Energy & Environment

2. Public Health

3. Food Security & Sustainable Development

4. Bi-lateral Trade and Investment

Objectives

Emerging opportunities and strategies to address challenges in these four areas that have been identified as priority sectors by both the Indian and Canadian governments will be the themes of this Conference. One of the objectives of this Conference is to gather experts and a new cadre of researchers to discuss their contributions to higher learning while weaving academic and institutional collaborations between Canada and India. It is expected that strategic recommendations will be derived from the Conference that will contribute to sustained academic and institutional partnerships.

Call for Papers

Papers are invited from faculty, post-doctoral researchers, and doctoral students from Shastri member institutions, as well as faculty/researchers from non-member institutions to present and share work that has been completed or is currently progressing in these four areas. The papers could be the outcome of research funded by the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute or by other agencies, universities or research institutions. We particularly encourage submissions that develop inter-disciplinary themes.

Abstract of papers must be submitted by April 30, 2013, to Dr. Prachi Kaul, Programme Officer, Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute by email at prachi@sici.org.in. Authors must indicate the focus area for which they would like their paper to be considered.

Travel and Accommodation

Economy class air-fare within India, and local accommodation in New Delhi, will be provided to out-station scholars whose papers have been selected for presentation at the Conference. Travel and accommodation arrangements/reimbursements will be done according to the travel and accommodation policy of the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute.

Hydro-power is the main energy resource in many hilly regions, including Himachal Pradesh which has more than 2,5000 MW of hydro-power potential in its five river basins. The hill state has followed the hydro-electric potential actively in the last few decades and till now has harnessed 35% of its estimated capacity. Hydro-power development in the mountain regions of India is now at a stage when it is desirable to evaluate the economic impact of this development to check and assess whether the hydro-power projects have made a substantial and positive impact on the livelihoods and lifestyle of the people and their economic development.

At the same time big power projects have been an area of concern for the environmentalists who hold that economic benefits are wiped out by the environmentally degrading impact of these projects on the fragile mountain ecosphere. Although project specific cultural and sociological studies are also being made, yet there is need to assess and evaluate the changes that these projects have brought to the ethos and way of life in the hill communities.

The National Seminar will bring together the stakeholders to engage in an informed debate about the pros and cons of hydro-electric power projects in mountain regions, particularly, Himachal Pradesh. The focus will be on economic development brought about by the harnessing of hydro-power in the state and assessing at the same time its impact on ecology and the socio-cultural life of the inhabitants. Canada being a leading country in the world in the area of hydro-power technology is a reference point for the discussions and for possible partnerships and policy recommendations and exchange of institutional cooperation to build and renew the thinking process in hydro power development in the times to come.

(a) Economic development of the mountain regions

(b) Employment opportunities and livelihood viability

(c) Environment and ecological issues

(d) Improving the health & life of rivers after exploitation of the rivers’ potential

(e) Development sustainability

(f) Relief and rehabilitation concerns

(g) Disaster management implications

(g) Evaluation mechanisms of the project affected area/zone after the commissioning of projects

(h) Research analysis and application thereof in the evolving planning and development process

(i) Socio–cultural impacts and responses to them





Recommended style:-

Submissions in MS Word, neatly typed in 1.15 spacing on A4 size paper, having margins 1.5 inches on the left and 1.0 inch on the right. Font name:Times New Roman infont size: 12. Bibliographical referencing should be in alphabetical ascending order and be made on a separate sheet at the end of the paper.



The length of the abstract should be 200-250 words.



The length of the full paper should be between 2000-3000 words including references and charts.



The name of the author(s), title of the paper, correspondence address and e-mail ID should be on a separate cover page. The abstract for peer review should contain only the title of the paper.

Registration Fee: Rs. 500/- (to be paid at the time of registration at the Seminar venue).

The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, in collaboration with HEC Montreal and Canada India Business Council, is organizing a conference on “Doing Business in India” on March 1 as follow:

From 7:30 to 16:30 :Participation open to all

This conference will focus on identifying key opportunities, challenges and best practices for potential Canadian investments in India on some priority sectors, i.e. energy, food security, infrastructure and education etc. The Conference program includes panels on important challenges faced in key areas mentioned above and will be attended by eminent researchers and scholars from Universities in Quebec/Canada working in collaboration with their Indian partners. The focus will be on the following key areas:

■Quebec & India partnerships

■Women in Indian businesses

■Development Issues


From 16h:30 to 21h:00: Round Table on “Future agenda for Canada India Partnership; Unlocking its full potential” jointly organized by Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute and Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce.
Attendance to the round table is by invitations only.

The Round Table will focus on key areas of agriculture and food processing; education; energy, science, technology and innovation; SMEs and bridge building role of Indo-Canadians.

We expect senior academic and Industry leaders from both Canada and India along with community and government representatives to participate in the event. Interaction of academic leadership, researchers and scholars with the industry and government stakeholders is an important key objective of the Round Table discussions.

Both SICI and ICCC are united in their objective to make due contribution to the promotion of Canada India Partnership and for unlocking the full potential of Canada-India relations in coming years
