Grants Competition for 2012-13 Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute

The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute is very pleased to inform you that the following grant competitions are open and are accepting applications for 2012-2013. We would appreciate it if you could disseminate this information within your institution.


Action Research Project (ARPG) – Deadline September 9. http://www.sici.org/programmes/details/action-research-project-grants-arpg-2011-12/

The objective of the grant is to support applied and participatory research to find local solutions that will have lasting impacts on communities in India by improving the human condition.
Priority themes are:
ü Sustainable/community-based agriculture
ü Climate Change and Clean Energy
ü Economic Development
ü Pro-Poor Policy
ü Gender Equality and Environmental Sustainability are cross cutting themes in all of these development priorities.


Value: CDN$ 10,000 per project

Institutional Research Collaboration Development Grant (IRCDG) – Deadline September 9. http://www.sici.org/programmes/details/shastri-institutional-research-collaboration-development-grant/

The objective of IRCDG is to support the Institute’s research collaboration programs in the area of socio-economic development with focus on sustainable development. Themes of particular interests to the Institute are: pro-poor growth policies, poverty reduction, food security, child and youth education and employment, development of local business and SMEs, environment and energy, gender and health, and good governance.


Value: Up to CAD$ 10,000/per project.

Duration: 4.5 months (1 October 2012– 15 February 2013).



Shastri Pro-Development Initiative Grant Project (PDIG) – Deadline September 9. http://www.sici.org/programmes/details/shastri-pro-development-initiative-grant-pdig-project-2011-12/

The objective of this PDIG project is of two folds: a) to reinforce the Institute’s support to the development priorities concerning India; b) to encourage and support the member institutions making a bridge between Canada’s International development priorities (for India) and their own academic interests.The proposed PDIG projects may be built upon one or more of the following areas:


ü Bi-national partnership development initiatives with Institutions
ü Initiation of bi-national research project
ü Development initiatives engaging member institutions and development partner organization/s
ü Student Development initiatives/opportunities (exchanges, exposure trip, etc)

Value: Up to $10,000 CAD (one project per participating institution

Duration: 4 months (1 October 2012- 31 January 2013).

Partnership Development Seed Grant (PDSG) – Deadline September 9. http://www.sici.org/programmes/details/partnership-development-seed-grant-2011-2012/

The purpose of the grant is to be a catalyst for activities which contribute to formal institutional agreements or other long-term partnerships between Canadian and Indian institutions. Funds may be used to support a bi-national seminar, conference, meeting, etc.

Value: Up to $8,000/per project

Duration: 4 months – (October – January 2013)

Faculty Mobility Program – Deadline September 9. http://www.sici.org/programmes/details/faculty-mobility-program-2012-2013/

This project aims at contributing to the capacity building of the faculty members/s of the host institution including the internationalization of curriculum/teaching methodologies in the host institutions. The project will also provide an opportunity to enhance Canadian faculty members’ understanding of the recent developments in India.
Value: The grant includes a round-trip economy class airfare from the city of residence in Canada to the city of affiliated institutions in India and a monthly stipend as per the travel policy of the Institute.

Duration: 4 – 6 Weeks



Student Excellence Awards – Deadline September 9. http://www.sici.org/programmes/details/student-excellence-awards/
The purpose of this award is to assist undergraduate and graduate students further their study of India and prepare them for a career in an India related field


Value: $2,000

Number of Awards: Two awards will be distributed to undergraduates, and three awards will be distributed to graduate students.

Duration: Project should be completed between November 2012 and February 2013.



Youth International Internship Program – Deadline September 15. http://www.sici.org/programmes/details/shastri-international-youth-internship-award/

The internship will provide a unique opportunity to young Canadians to employ their knowledge and skills in a foreign country and attain enhanced intercultural communication skills working in the context of a developing country like India.


Value: The interns will be provided with actual international travel costs (a round-trip economy class air fare between Canada and India, including travel-health insurance and Indian visa fee), and a monthly stipend as per the policy of the Institute. Mentoring and cultural awareness training will be provided.

Duration: Three (3) months (1 November 2012 – January 2013)

Internship Project for Indian Students – Deadline September 15. http://www.sici.org/programmes/details/internship-project-for-indian-students/


Indian graduate students to further their study in a business or technical streams and prepare them for a career in related fields. Eligible disciplines include, Trade and commerce, Economic development, Marketing, Management, Computer sciences, Engineering, Health and Social Services System.


Value: Round-trip economy class air fare between India and Canada, including travel-health insurance and Canadian visa fee) and a stipend of $500 per week.

Duration: 5 weeks. Project should be completed between November and January 2013


Scholar Travel Subsidy Grant (STSG) – Deadline October 1. http://www.sici.org/programmes/details/scholar-travel-subsidy-grant-2011/

This travel grant assists scholars to participate in conferences and academic meetings through travel subsidies.
Value: The Shastri Institute will provide 50% of the scholar’s total travel costs up to CAD$ 1,250. Other associated costs, such as costs related to visas, meals, per diem and accommodation are not eligible to this grant.

Shastri Lester Pearson Memorial Lecture – Deadline October 1. http://www.sici.org/programmes/details/shastri-lester-pearson-memorial-lecture/

The Shastri Institute will contribute funding to one of our Canadian member institutions to host an Indian world renowned expert for a one-time event. The event will focus on a contemporary topic relevant to the Indo-Canadian relationship. The event should have a wide public appeal.

The Shastri Institute is seeking applications from its Canadian member institutions to host a distinguished speaker for a one-time event. The lecture should examine a current topic relevant to the Indo-Canadian relationship.
Value: $1500

Lester Pearson Award for ‘Best Paper’ And ‘Best Doctoral Dissertation’ of the Year: Deadline October 1.

The grant aims at encouraging and engaging students in India to create and/or sustain their interest in Canada through their experiences, understanding and research.

The grant encourages graduate and undergraduate students to write papers on topics with specific relevance to India-Canada relations including environment, history, law, literature, international Trade, politics, philosophy, India-Canada economic development, social studies, humanities, science or women’s studies
